SPEED CAMERAS ARE BACK IN ONTARIO!!!

Starting July 6, 2020 a number of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Cameras have started giving out tickets in the GTA and other neighboring municipalities. A number of people are worried and don't know how it works.

The ASE Cameras catch anyone speeding and take a photo of the offence. The photos can have the time and data of the picture, a description of the location where the picture was taken, the rate of speed, an indicator to identify the vehicle involved and the posted speed limit on the road where the photo was taken. The vehicle’s licence plate will need to be clearly seen in an enlargement of the picture. Each photo will need to be certified by a provincial offences officer. The photo is then sent to the registered owner of the vehicle within 23 days of the alleged offence date. There are zero demerit points for these tickets, only fines.

The tickets will be for fines as follows:

$5 per km/h for those going 1-19 km/h over the speed limit;

$7.50 per km/h for those going 20-29 km/h over the speed limit; and

$12 per km/h for those going 30-49 km/h over the speed limit.

That means that someone going 49 kilometres per hour over the speed limit would be automatically sent a ticket for $588 plus another $130 for a victim surcharge and court costs. People doing 50 km and hour and over will receive a summons to appear in Court.
